A Hyles euphorbiae é uma das espécies de esfingídeos presentes em Portugal continental. As lagartas se desenvolvem durante todo o verão e vivem se alimentando das plantas do gênero Euphorbia, que são arbustos com um suco leitoso de propriedades tóxicas. Delas extraem substâncias que lhes servem de protecção contra os depredadores, mas estes podem reconhecer o perigo através do aposematismo e as cores tão vivas que apresentam as lagartas. Os esfingídeos destacam por possuir um corno ou chifre na parte posterior do corpo. Um dos aspectos mais característicos de esta espécie é que as lagartas se enterram no solo para formar a crisálida, onde permanece umas semanas até que eclode e nasce uma borboleta adulta de cor castanho e rosa.

The Spurge Hawk-moth is a species of hawkmoths present in continental Portugal. The caterpillars grow throughout the summer and live by feeding on the plants of the genus Euphorbia (Spurge), which are a kind of bushes with a milky juice of toxic properties. The catterpillars extract substances that serve as protection against predators, but they can recognize the danger through aposematism features and the colors so light that they have. The hawkmoths distinguished by having a horn or on the rear of the body. One of the most characteristic features of this species is that the caterpillars burrow into the soil to form a chrysalis, where it remains until a few weeks and hatches. After that, is born an adult with colour brown and pink.
